Free pattern - Decorative banner

Noémie Zicat

I wanted to share with you a simple pattern to make a pretty cotton banner. I think it's a beautiful decorative accessory and a really easy project for beginners! You can find the free pattern HERE.

Materials:

- 32-inch (81 cm) jute or macramé cord.

- 12-inch (30.5 cm) wooden dowel, diameter between 3/8 and 7/16 inch, drilled or not at each end.

- 2 pieces of 35 cm x 30 cm 100% cotton fabric.

- Vinyl or appliqué (optional)

Step 1:

  • Cut 2 pieces using the provided pattern.

Step 2:

  • Sew right sides together all around except the top with a 3/8 inch (1 cm) seam allowance.

Step 3:

  • Trim seam allowance to 1/8 inch and notch the corners.

Step 4:

  • Turn the banner right side out. Carefully push out the corners and press. Topstitch (optional).

Step 5:

  • Fold the top down 3/8 inch (1 cm) from the edge and press.

Step 6:

  • Fold again at 1.25 inches (3 cm) and press.

Step 7:

  • Stitch in place at 1/8 inch (3 mm) from the edge.

Step 8 (optional):

  • Apply a heat transfer vinyl or appliqué on the preferred side of the banner.

Step 9:

  • Insert the wooden dowel into the casing formed earlier. Tie the cord. Repeat with the other end of the cord. And there you go!
